This course offers an introduction to the ideas and issues that constitute the interdisciplinary field
of sustainability. Sustainability posits social equity, environmental integrity, and economic
prosperity as desirable goals while recognizing that these goals may be in competition with each
other. Recently, the viability of sustainability as a whole has been questioned, and alternative
models have been proposed. Through the examination of general themes and specific case
studies, we will connect readings and films with contemporary national and international
environmental challenges across the social and natural sciences, the humanities, and business
both on a local and global scale. We will also hear from Emory faculty and staff who embrace
diverse visions of sustainability in their work. In short, this course addresses the questions of
what are the promises, parameters, and challenges of sustainability in the current century, and
what are the ramifications for our own lives.
